Where
Rock is one of the materials you'll find a bit later in the first part of the game. Specifically, it's to be found in the ground in the Desert.
Use
This is one of the tougher materials you'll be able to mine - anything built with Rock is naturally harder to chew through than anything built on Wood 
, for instance. You'll therefore need to mine Rock in order to build Bricks and tough shelters that give mobs a hard time. Build some Bricks and use them to construct your first shelter once you're told it's getting dark soon, and you should survive the first night just fine. Note that Bricks cannot be directly placed on the ground - they need to be connected to a Foundation, which you can also construct from your list of Crafting Parts.
